About the song
“Likey” is the lead single from TWICE’s first full studio album, released on October 30, 2017, marking one of the group’s most iconic and defining comebacks. JYP Entertainment officially announced the return earlier that month, building strong anticipation among fans. Two music video teasers were released on October 28, followed by the full digital release of the song and MV across global music platforms on the 30th.
The track later appeared in both Korean and Japanese versions on the group’s second compilation album #TWICE2, released on March 6, 2019. The Japanese lyrics were written by Mayu Wakisaka, and a full Japanese version was pre-released as a digital single on January 10, accompanied by its own music video.
Musically, “Likey” blends TWICE’s signature bright pop sound with an addictive hook and playful energy, capturing the excitement and anxiety of wanting someone’s attention — especially through social media. Written by Black Eyed Pilseung collaborators (earattack, Louise Frick Sveen) and lyrically led by Sana and earattack, the song speaks to the universal desire to feel seen, validated, and adored.
Its music video, filmed largely in Vancouver, Canada, became instantly iconic for its colorful visuals and dynamic choreography, going on to break numerous view records at the time of release. “Likey” remains one of TWICE’s most recognizable hits and a defining moment in their rise as global K-POP leaders.
Composition
“Likey” was composed by Black Eyed Pilseung and Jeon Gun. It is the fourth collaboration between TWICE and Black Eyed Pilseung, following the hit singles “Like OOH-AHH,” “Cheer Up,” and “TT.” The track is a future electro-pop song that opens with a synth-focused intro and continues with kids’ cheering sounds, trumpet lines, and old-school synthesizer samples throughout the song.
Lyrically, it portrays the struggle of trying to earn a “like” from someone you care about, along with the pressure to maintain a beautiful social-media image.
Music Video
Produced by Naive Creative Production for JYP Entertainment, the “Likey” music video was directed by Kim Young-jo and Yoo Seung-woo. It was uploaded on JYP Entertainment’s official YouTube channel on October 30, 2017.
The MV was filmed entirely in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, during early September 2017, showcasing several of the city’s most iconic locations. It was also highlighted on CTV News Vancouver, which noted that the video was expected to boost local tourism. Some shots were even filmed directly by TWICE’s leader, Jihyo.
In the beginning of the video, TWICE plays around at Granville Island and Sunset Beach at the roller-hockey rink with ocean views. They also gather at a gelato shop called Ocean Rock Café on Marine Drive in White Rock. The dance scenes feature backgrounds such as: • Gastown alleys • Maple Tree Square • “Alley Oop,” the colorful downtown alley between Granville St. and Seymour St. • Hallelujah Point in Stanley Park
Other notable appearances include the Gastown Steam Clock, Angel Handpainted Fashions, White Rock Pier, the Steveston Marine Garage, and a SkyTrain riding an old Mark I train.
On December 3, 2017, the music video surpassed 100 million views on YouTube in just 33 days, setting a new record for the fastest K-pop girl-group MV to reach the milestone at the time. In February 2021, it surpassed 500 million views.
