“CHEER UP” is a track by the girl group TWICE, released on April 25, 2016 as the title song of their second EP PAGE TWO under JYP Entertainment. The song was written by Sam Lewis and composed by Brave Brothers, blending TWICE’s signature bright energy with a catchy hook that quickly became their trademark.
Breakout Success in Korea
The song was a massive hit in South Korea. It reached #1 on the Gaon Digital Chart, dominating digital performance across the country. “CHEER UP” also won multiple major awards, including Song of the Year at both the Melon Music Awards and the Mnet Asian Music Awards, two of the biggest award shows in Korea. On Melon, the track became the first girl group song in five years to top the annual chart since T-ARA’s “Roly-Poly” in 2011, and it ranked 16th on the Melon decade chart, the highest-ranking girl group song of the 2010s.
Record-Breaking YouTube Milestones
On November 17, 2016, at 6:40 AM, the music video for “CHEER UP” reached 100 million views on YouTube. This achievement made TWICE the fastest K-pop idol group at the time to hit 100 million views since debut, and it came just a week after their debut song “Like OOH-AHH” also crossed 100 million views — giving TWICE back-to-back 100M-view music videos very early in their career.
Japanese Debut & Global Expansion
On February 24, 2017, TWICE officially announced their Japanese debut, set for June 28. As part of this launch, they released a compilation album titled #TWICE, featuring both Korean and Japanese versions of their hit songs, including “CHEER UP.” The Japanese lyrics were written by Yuka Shimoji, helping TWICE adapt the track for their fast-growing global audience.
