About the Song
“Forever Young” is a standout track from
BLACKPINK’s first Korean EP
Square Up, released on June 15, 2018. Written and produced by
Teddy and
Future Bounce, the song blends
moombahton, reggaeton-tinged rhythms, and a bright, summery energy that contrasts with the group’s darker, punchier hits. Although it was originally recorded in 2015—well before their debut—it finally reached the public as the EP’s second track. A Japanese version later appeared on their compilation album
Blackpink in Your Area in 2018.
Despite not being promoted as a single, “Forever Young” became a major commercial success. It peaked at No. 2 on the Gaon Digital Chart in Korea, surpassed 2.5 million downloads, and became
BLACKPINK’s second track to earn a platinum certification from the KMCA. Internationally, it charted at No. 36 on the Japan Hot 100, earned a gold certification for streaming in Japan, and reached the top five in both Malaysia and Singapore.
The song gained additional attention when pre-debut footage resurfaced of Rosé and Lisa casually singing part of the track outside YG Entertainment’s headquarters back in 2015—leading many at the time to mistake it for an unreleased 2NE1 song. Critics have highlighted its “beachy” atmosphere and memorable declaration, “BLACKPINK is the revolution,” noting how the inclusion of English swear words was unusually bold for a K-pop girl group.
