About the Song
《Black Suit》 was released by SUPER JUNIOR as the title track of their 2017 album Play, following a series of sleek video teasers leading up to its November 6 release under SM Entertainment, Label SJ, and Genie. Composed by Martin Hoberg Hedegaard and Coach & Sendo with lyrics by Lee Seuran, Jo Yoon-kyung, Oh Min-ju, Lim Jung-hyo, and ESBEE, the song draws inspiration from Lupin, telling a playful story of a man in a black suit who “steals” hearts with effortless charm and confidence. The track enjoyed strong commercial response, peaking at No. 23 on the Gaon Digital Chart and surpassing 92,000 downloads in its first month. Its music video, directed by Rigend Film, presents a stylish heist set at a black-tie auction and later earned International Music Video of the Year at the 2018 Myx Music Awards. A concert favorite, “Black Suit” became a staple throughout major tours including Super Show 7, Super Show 8: Infinite Time, and Super Show 9: Road. The release marked a highly anticipated return following member enlistments after the 2015 albums Devil and Magic. Early hints of the comeback appeared with “D-40” teasers and the launch of SJ Returns, documenting 120 days of preparation. The song was first shown in Episodes 17–18 as one of five finalist title-track candidates shortlisted from over a hundred demos, ultimately selected through anonymous internal voting. Ahead of the release, SUPER JUNIOR unveiled several teaser clips before premiering both the song and music video on November 6, featuring vocals from Leeteuk, Heechul, Yesung, Shindong, Eunhyuk, Siwon, and Donghae.
